The Death of Globalization and the Rise of a New Socioeconomic Landscape (TheKoinBlog)

Globalization, once deemed the desirable endgame of human economic progress, now seems to be on life support. The concept, which promises a global village where goods, services, and ideas freely intermingle, is facing strong headwinds.

This blog post will look at the factors leading to the death of globalization and speculate on what may emerge from its ashes.

Exclusive: Iran Issues Houthi Warning to US—'Justified' Targets (NewsWeek)

Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, has accused the U.S. and the U.K. of declaring war against the Yemeni people after two nights of joint airstrikes on the country.

The strikes targeted positions of the Houthi movement—officially known as Ansarullah—that, since 2014, has been at war with the internationally recognized government backed by a Saudi Arabia-led coalition. The Houthis have long maintained close ties with Tehran and are widely considered to be part of Iran's regional "Axis of Resistance."

Western Strikes on Houthis Mostly Failed (InfoWars)

The US-led strikes on alleged positions of Houthi militias in Yemen have failed to significantly weaken their military potential and prevent them from further attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea, the New York Times reported on Saturday, citing sources.

US delivers 'private message' to Iran after Yemen strikes (BBC)

President Biden says the US has delivered a "private message" to Iran about the Houthis in Yemen after the US carried out a second strike on the group. "We delivered it privately and we're confident we're well-prepared," he said without giving further details. The US said its latest strike was a "follow-on action" targeting radar. Iran denies involvement in attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea.

However Tehran is suspected of supplying the Houthis with weapons, and the US says Iranian intelligence is critical to enabling them to target ships. Joint UK-US airstrikes targeted nearly 30 Houthi positions in the early hours of Friday with the support of Western allies including Australia and Canada.

Houthis mistakenly target tanker carrying Russian oil (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) - Houthi militants mistakenly targeted a tanker carrying Russian oil in a missile attack on Friday off Yemen, British maritime security firm Ambrey said.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organisation said it had received a report of a missile being fired 90 nautical miles southeast of Yemen's port city of Aden. "The master reported a missile landing in the water 400-500 metres away, and being followed by three small craft," the UKMTO advisory note said, adding that there were no injuries or damage.

Putin Ally Says Poland Is 'Next' in Ukraine War Rant on Russian TV (NewsWeek)

A Russian lawmaker and close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested during a recent TV appearance that Moscow could target Poland next amid its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

First beginning on Putin's order in February 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine is nearing its second anniversary as the fighting continues, with seemingly no end in sight. While the Ukrainian "special military operation" has reportedly not gone to plan, Russian officials have nevertheless continued to hint at similar invasions in the near future, usually suggesting former Soviet Union territories as likely targets, such as Moldova or the Balkan States.

The latest potential future target hinted at by a Russian official is Poland, which was never officially a Soviet territory, but did exist alongside it in the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.

China's 'Destroyer of Peace' Wins Taiwan Election in Blow to Xi Jinping (NewsWeek)

Taiwan's Vice President Lai Ching-te won the self-ruled island's presidential election on Saturday in a blow to China, which had branded him a "destroyer of peace."

China had warned Taiwan its contest amounted to a choice between war and peace. Beijing claims sovereignty over the island and has vowed to unify with it—through force if necessary—though the Chinese Communist Party has never governed there. The United States supports Taiwan's self-rule and provides it with defensive weapons, to China's fury.

Taiwan's election comes at a time of global turbulence, with the United States already preoccupied supporting wars in Ukraine against China's Russian ally and in the Middle East, where Israel is fighting Iranian-backed Hamas and Hezbollah and where the U.S. has struck Yemen after related attacks on shipping by Houthi rebels.

Taiwan election: China says US 'gravely wrong' to congratulate new leader (BBC)

China has accused the US of sending "a gravely wrong signal" to those pushing for Taiwan's independence after Saturday's election result. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent Taiwanese president-elect William Lai a message of congratulations following the result.

Beijing called the message aviolation of Washington's commitment to maintain only unofficial ties with Taiwan. Mr Lai has vowed to protect Taiwan from an increasingly aggressive China.

Tough choices for Israel in US's Middle East vision (BBC)

At a press briefing in Tel Aviv on Tuesday - after a day of meetings with Israeli leaders - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was surprisingly upbeat.Answering a question about the future of Gaza, he said he had just delivered a "new" and "very powerful" message to the Israelis - one that would end the cycle of  violence in the Middle East once and for all.

Blinken had spent the past four days travelling around the Middle East, with three objectives - persuading Israel to wind down its offensive, reducing tensions in the region, and easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

As he concluded a trip which also took in Turkey, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt, US-led air strikes were launched at Houthis in Yemen. While Blinken flew back across the Atlantic, the attacks will have left him wondering how his second objective can be met.

But the news conference in Tel Aviv days before hinted at the possibility of progress on what lies ahead.

The Regional War No One Wanted Is Here. How Wide Will It Get? (NYT)

LONDON — From the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war nearly 100 days ago, U.S. President Joe Biden and his aides have struggled to keep the war contained, fearful that a regional escalation could quickly draw in U.S. forces.

Now, with the U.S.-led strikes on nearly 30 sites in Yemen on Thursday and a smaller strike Friday, there is no longer a question of whether there will be a regional conflict. It has already begun. The biggest questions now are the conflict’s intensity and whether it can be contained.

Netanyahu says Israel will cut Gaza off from Egypt, taking control of Palestinian enclave’s remaining border (CNN)

The border between Egypt and Gaza “must” be closed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday – a move that would give Israel complete control over the Palestinian enclave’s access to the world.

During a press briefing, Netanyahu said that Israel would not consider the war finished until it closes the Philadelphi Corridor, a 14km strip of land that serves as a buffer zone on the border between Egypt and Gaza. “We’ll destroy Hamas, we’ll demilitarize Gaza, and military equipment and other deadly weapons will continue to enter this southern opening, so of course we need to close it,” Netanyahu said.

Egypt has previously warned Israel against military operations in the corridor, according to Egypt’s Ahram Online. The state-run news outlet, citing an unnamed source, reported in October that any Israeli incursion into the Philadelphi Corridor would be seen as a violation of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty of 1979.

Nearly 900 people have been arrested in Ecuador since Tuesday in a national security operation to stop an outburst of gang violence, Ecuador’s presidency said. The presidency says 94 of the 859 people detained are members of what they call “terrorist” groups.

Ecuador has been rocked by blasts, police kidnappings and prison disturbances in a wave of violence beginning with the prison escape of one of Ecuador’s most powerful drug lords last weekend. Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa on Tuesday declared the country to be in a state of “internal armed conflict,” ordering security forces to “neutralize” several criminal gangs accused of spreading extreme violence.

Americans Eat Up to 3.8 Million Bits of Plastic Each Year via Protein Alone (NewsWeek)

Microplastics are all around us—in the soil, in the air, in the sea and in our food. But exactly how much plastic we are eating daily is still somewhat of a mystery.

The average person consumes a credit card's worth of microscopic plastic particles every week, according to previous estimates, and new studies have shown that this plastic often shows up in places you might not expect.

"The sad truth is that scientists have found microplastics pretty much everywhere they've looked, including in air, water and sediment [soil]," George Leonard, chief scientist at the Ocean Conservancy, told Newsweek.
